115 Daimyo oak (Quercus dentata)—informal upright style Donated by Dr. Robert Gotcher. Historically, this is one of the most important bonsai and the longest in cultivation in the United States. In 1863 during Lincoln’s presidency, Mr. Burlingame was envoy to China. This tree was a gift to him as he passed through Japan on his return to the United States. The peninsula city of Burlingame was named for this man from Massachusetts. Its name, Daimyo, was the title of a feudal ruler before the Meiji restoration in 1871.
118 California juniper (kashu-shimpaku in Japanese) (Juniperus californica) —slant style Donated by Tad Sakuma. This tree, collected from the high desert of southern California, was styled in 1987 by the Japanese master Kimura.
120 Atlas cedar (ginba-sugi in Japanese) (Cedrus atlantica) —group style Donated by Jim Ransohoff. Styled in 1959 from small seedlings, this is a group of cedars native to the Atlas Mountains of far northwestern Africa. Note that trees have different characteristics, indicating that they came from different parents, not just one seed tree.

Complementary plants—A bonsai typically is displayed flowing toward its companion plant, a plant that flows toward the tree and is part of the tree’s visual image. A tree and its companion plant form a visual scalene triangle. Accent plants are artistic pieces standing alone. An accent plant causes the viewer to stop and contemplate its composition and beauty before moving on to the next bonsai with its companion plant.

Suiseki—In this garden you will encounter viewing stones. In Japanese these are known as sui.seki, literally “water” + “stone”. Appreciation of suiseki was introduced from China to Japan around the 6th century C.E. Suiseki suggest landscapes and grandeur of nature, all in miniature. Rarely the viewer may see an animal or artifact of man.
